Capturing Connection: Meet Ashley Rivers of Rivers Light Photography

When it comes to preserving the most meaningful moments, Ashley Rivers does more than take photos - she captures connection. As the heart behind Rivers Light Photography, Ashley approaches each session with an artist’s eye and a deep appreciation for authentic emotion. Whether she’s documenting a seaside ceremony or a quiet glance between soulmates, her work radiates warmth, honesty, and love. In this interview, Ashley shares the philosophy behind her photography, her favorite island locations, and what inspires her most about working with couples on the coast.

Tell us a little about yourself and how you got started in wedding photography.

Hi, I’m Ashley! I’m deeply passionate about my marriage and making memories with the people I love. When I’m not behind the camera, you’ll likely find me baking something sweet for girls’ night, starting a new home project, or unwinding by gaming.

Photography began as a creative outlet, and in the early days, I dabbled in everything—from children’s portraits to sports. Then in 2019, a wedding photographer (now a dear friend!) invited me to assist her on a wedding day. She said she thought I’d love it—and she was absolutely right. As someone who’s both a romantic at heart and deeply family-oriented, wedding photography feels like the perfect fit for me!

How would you describe your photography style, and what inspires your approach to capturing weddings?

My photography style is vibrant, true-to-color, and rooted in storytelling. I’m drawn to the way a single image can hold emotion, memory, and meaning for generations to come.

My goal is to document your wedding day in a way that feels honest and heartfelt. I want you to look back and remember not just how everything looked, but how it felt. During portraits, I’ll offer gentle direction to keep things natural and effortless. The rest of the day, I’ll be quietly observing—capturing the candid, joy-filled moments between you and the people you love most.

When it comes to editing, I favor natural, vibrant tones that reflect the real beauty of your day—true to life, yet artistically preserved, so your photos become keepsakes that stand the test of time.

You have a love for historic venues and grand estates. What is it about these locations that inspires you the most?

I’ve always been drawn to places that feel like they have a story to tell—and historic venues and grand estates do just that! The character of these buildings create a beautiful, romantic atmosphere that really elevates the feel of a portrait.

What do you enjoy most about photographing newlywed portraits? Why is that moment so special to you?

Newlywed portraits are one of my favorite parts of the day! In the midst of all the celebration, it’s a moment where the two of you can pause, breathe, and simply be together—as husband and wife. After months (or even years) of planning, this is your moment.

What’s your approach to capturing authentic, emotional moments between couples?

My goal is for you to look back and say, “That’s us! That’s our love!” I believe authentic moments come from comfort and connection, which is why getting to know my couples is such an important part of my process. I tailor my posing and prompts based on your unique personalities, dynamics, and everything we’ve shared in our conversations leading up to the wedding. It’s thoughtful and strategic, but always with the heart in mind!

How do you help couples feel comfortable in front of the camera, especially during intimate newlywed portraits?

I keep the focus on their connection and the joy of the moment while also providing clear direction for posing. I genuinely love capturing newlywed portraits, and that excitement gets them even more excited. I also show couples the back of my camera as we go—it always builds their excitement to see how beautiful and natural they look!

Can you share a favorite wedding day story or a moment you’ll never forget?

There are many for sure, but one moment that was personal for me is when a bride’s mom came up to me during the reception. She’d been watching me in the midst of everything that day. She expressed how much it meant to her that I was there, capturing these memories for her family and doing it with a contagious smile. She could tell I loved what I do and that I understand how special these moments are for them. It meant a lot to me that she took a moment to share with me because I do put my heart into it.

What advice would you give couples when choosing a wedding photographer?

Great question!

First, I recommend you choose someone whose experience and approach you trust. Ask to see full galleries, not just highlight reels, so you know what to expect. Learn how they handle wedding days—do they guide with confidence or rely on you for direction? Are they responsive, helpful, and attentive to your concerns?

Second, choose someone you genuinely enjoy being around! Your photographer is with you through some of the most intimate, emotional moments of the day. Their presence should feel natural. That connection makes all the difference in how you feel in front of the camera and how your memories are captured too.

How do you ensure your couples get timeless, romantic images that they’ll cherish forever?

I think timeless, romantic images come from a blend of preparation and creativity. I come into the day with a plan, but my eyes are constantly scanning for the best spots - places where the light, setting, and emotion of a pose all come together naturally.

You often capture weddings in stunning outdoor settings. What do you love most about photographing weddings surrounded by nature and florals?

I do love when couples get married surrounded by nature, it makes it feel incredibly magical. The golden light through trees, a breeze moving through a veil, the vibrant colors of florals - these elements add dimension you can’t get indoors.

What are your favorite venues to photograph on Galveston Island, and why?

There are so many great venues in Galveston! So far my favorites would have to be The Artisian, The Bryan Museum, and the Grand Galvez! They are unique and beautiful backdrops for photos.

What should couples expect when they book Rivers Light Photography for their wedding?

When you book Rivers Light Photography, you’re getting someone who truly cares about your story and enjoys the art of photography. I’m there to make you feel comfortable, to help guide you through the day, and to capture the special moments. I want you to be fully present—so I handle the details, the timeline, and the light. I want you to have a gallery full of images that reflect your love just as it was. Real. Joyful. Timeless.

What’s one thing you wish every couple knew about wedding photography before their big day?

The best photos happen when the couple commits to trusting their photographer and being fully in the joy of each moment. I work with many couples who want nice photos but also don’t want to feel like they’re just going from photoshoot to photoshoot. Together, we create a photo schedule that feels natural and allows them to make fun memories with their loved ones. Photos can be a fun and memorable part of your wedding day!

Where can couples find more of your work and get in touch with you?
